BIM technology is a way of integrating software, three dimensional models and databases for the development of a virtual model which simulates a constructed building and all of its components. This technology allows a coordinated design for the project in all disciplines (Architecture, Structure and Facilities) and helps to improve building management in the phases of design, construction and exploitation. This advanced system allows, amongst others, the detection of errors in the initial phases of the project as well as better coordination in all disciplines and help to guard against delays and overspending in the building phase.
In fact, thanks to BIM technology, Espai Barça will be able to save up to 20% of its construction budget and more than 15% annually on management and maintenance. As such, the risks of the project are lessened and the efficiency and sustainability of the project, from the design phase, construction and the functioning and management of the building, are increased.
In the case of the Estadi Johan Cruyff, the first piece in the Espai Barça project, it has been built using BIM technology right from the very start in the development of the design of the project, during the early stages as well as in the construction and exploitation phase.
As such, the Smart strategies implemented in the construction and design of the Estadi Johan Cruyff are also being implemented in different projects at the Les Corts Campus.
With regards to Camp Nou, in 2014 more than 5,000 laser scanners allowed modelling of the existing stadium and the creation of an exhaustive blueprint of the stadium that has served as the basis of the BIM design for the future stadium project. As such, data related to the structure, measurements, materials, spending, energy analysis, construction phases or any other parameter can be managed for the construction work for the renovation of Camp Nou.
Thanks to the implementation of this technology in the Espai Barça project, the Club received a prize for innovation at the The Stadium Business Awards Design & Development Awards 2017.
