One year since Espai Barça referendum

Last December 19 brought a massive turnout of 42,693 voters in support of the plans for the project

It's a year today that the club held its referendum on the Espai Barça. On 19 December 2021, the supporters ratified the decision of the Delegate Assembly on the financing of the future stadium, with 42,693 members, 80.8% of the total giving the thumbs-up to the proposal on a maximum of 1.5 billion euros in funding.

The turnout of 48,623 was the biggest ever for an FC Barcelona referendum, surpassing the 37,535 in a similar vote in 2014otantes.

Four months later, on 28 April 2022, and agreement was signed to start work on the project after the local council granted permission for it to begin in June, with the focus on the second and third tiers, technology, the environs of the stadium and exterior urban planning.

On June 21, it was announced that FC Barcelona will play at the Lluís Companys Olumpic Stadium in the 2023/24 season. President Joan Laporta and deputy mayor Jaume Collboni explained the agreement, including the expanded public transport and plans for sustainable mobility and increased maintenance and security services.

In recent months, the tenders for the Spotify Camp Nou project have been reaching their conclusions. The UTE formed by the companies Torrella Ingeniería – Arquitectura and JG Ingenieros has been appointed the work, while the Fieldfisher legal firm will be overseeing the internal controls, before work was able to start on demolishing part of the third tier while the league was on hold for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The masonry in that part of the ground has been withdrawn, as well as the cantilever roof over the South Goal (where the health centre was formerly located) as well as half of the third tier over the same goal area, which served as a counterweight. Traditional mechanical means were used for the work, with all the structures that were once above the fans in the second tier now having disappeared.

Three days a ago, the club was pleased to announce that the work was almost complete. The Spotify Camp Nou is thus being developed fully in accordance with plans and this phase will be considered complete when the ground reopens on New Year's Eve for the derby against Espanyol.
